Summer and more specifically August is here and that means vacation season! If you are like me, going on vacation is a much needed respite from the day to day grind. However, like most of us, my nutrition goes into the tank! I eat out almost every meal. I eat food that does not support my nutritional goals or is not healthy in any instance. Lastly, I drink way too many adult beverages!
Well, with some experience in doing the wrong things for too long, I have a few tips to make vacation and traveling that much healthier. Without further ado…
Stay at place that has a kitchen or a microwave and a fridge.
Planning to stay where you can cook or prepare most of your own food is the most critical step in keeping your nutrition on point. This allows you to bring your own groceries or shop for them when you get into town and cook some healthy meals while away. If you are traveling and can’t find a place with a kitchen or kitchenette, try to find a place with a microwave and fridge. You can shop or bring pre-packaged food like Territory Foods or pick something up at the local grocery store like Whole Foods or Trader Joe’s.
Research the healthy restaurant options before your trip.
Most vacation areas are chalk full of unhealthy eating options but also have a few healthy food gems. Create a list of places where you can go to that support your nutritional goals. Having a fun place to go for a meal is one of the best parts of a vacation! Treat yourself and treat yourself to food options that won’t hijack the hard work you put in the rest of the year.
Check the local gym scene for the area that you are going.
Just because you are on vacation doesn’t mean you can’t get a workout or two in. Most vacation destinations will have a gym or CrossFit gym where you can get your sweat on. Reach out to them about dropping-in. Not only will you get a great workout but the locals will be able to point you in the right direction of things to do, where to go for fun, and where to eat. If finding or going to gym isn’t going to work, create your own workout you can do in a hotel gym or room or outside on the beach! CrossFit Burke has a ton of Travel WOD’s to choose from!
Lastly, have fun! You’re on vacation!
Like I said in the beginning of this blog, unwind and recharge! Just be conscious of the choices you make while on vacation. Use vacation as a total mind and body cleanse and come back to the real world ready to get after it! Remember, your first day back is always Fran for some reason!
